04-30-2011 - VOTE THIS TUESDAY, MAY 3rd!  Although there are not a lot of ‘big’ issues and races in this year’s primary election, however we remind citizens, in those communities that do have elections, that it is our duty as Americans to vote in every election, and we urge every citizen to take the time to go to the polls on Tuesday.

01-04-2011 - PRESS RELEASE: When you resolve to give blood in the New Year, you’re committing to something that can help changes lives—including your own. A single whole blood donation may help save the lives of up to three people. And when you consider that January is National Blood Donor Month (and has been since 1970!), you have ample reason to roll up your sleeve and give the gift of life.

While the need for blood is constant, the winter time presents unique challenges for blood collection. Cold and snowy weather and the demands of the New Year can sometimes make it hard for people to come to donate. Now, as always, your donation is needed and may give someone another day, another week, another life to spend with loved ones and friends. So make the resolution of a lifetime: give blood.

An American Red Cross blood drive is scheduled at United Church of Christ in Suffield on Friday, January 7, 2011 from 2-7pm. Please help support this blood drive by offering the gift of life.
Appointments can be made by visiting www.redcrossblood.org and entering sponsor code UCOCSuffield.

05/05/2010 - The primary election is over for 2010 and it is now time to start looking toward November. Please note that ONLY a little over 20% of ALL registered Ohio voters turned out at the polls. Therefore, about 20% of the voting population just decided a number of issues and who appears on the ballot this November!  Locally, the proposed 1/4% Mogadore Income Tax increase passed.

05/03/2010 - Tomorrow is Tuesday, May 4th  and it is ELECTION DAY!  Pollsters are predicting ONLY a 23% voter turnout.  This is sad.  All of us must make it a point of pride to ask everyone we meet today if they are going to vote on Tuesday and tell them how important it is to do so.

Independents CAN VOTE in the Primary!  If they go to their assigned polling place they can ask for a Republican or Democratic ballot and vote in that parity's primary.  Independents can certainly vote for or against Issues and levies, which is reason enough to go to the polls.

02/05/2010 - According to the most recent Mogadore School Bell, "Therefore, the Board of Education will be requesting the property tax owners to approve a new operating tax on November 2, 2010. The exact millage being requested and cost to the property owner has not been confirmed by the County Auditor at this time. We will be holding a Community Meeting in April to present details of the tax levy..." .

01/30/2010 - "Slot machines" are in a gas station near you!  Recently, a number of local Spee-D-Foods gas stations have brought slot machines converted to "skill" game machines into their establishments.  Reel Vegas Slots is using the Akron-Canton market as a testing ground and hopes to expand into the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati areas in the future.

With current Ohio law, local zoning codes can regulate where these machines are located.  Local lawmakers would be wise to quickly draft and enact legislation to limit these machines and their use or they will surely be in every establishment in town.  Effective local zoning regulation would prohibit these machines from being located within certain minimum distances from schools, daycares, churches and community centers.  This would help to protect our families from being directly exposed to the gaming business and some of the undesirables associated with this business.

01/20/2010 - The Mogadore Historical Society met Tuesday evening at the municipal building to discuss 2010 events.  There was a discussion about any new ideas to get people involved in preserving Mogadore's history and promoting the Historical Society to the community.  The first event of 2010 will be held some time in March.  As soon as details are available, we will post it on the website.

01/13/2010 - In addition to the recent closing of Mike's Variety Cars, it appears that another Mogadore business has gone out of business.  Hungry Howie's Pizza has gone dark and the doors are locked.  There is a rumor that another pizza shop may be going into the same location.  We will wait to see what happens.

01/13/2010 - Ohio's political engine just got started up for the new year.  Auditor of Ohio, Mary Taylor  announced today that she will be running for Lt. Governor of Ohio with John Kasich, candidate for Governor of Ohio.  With the dismal state of affairs in Ohio, unemployment still in double digits and current Governor Strickland's lack of popularity, this year's Ohio Governor's race is sure to be a heated race that will gain national attention.

01/04/2010 - Mogadore native, Michael Lacy, is the lead Web developer of www.Quirky.com.  Do you have a great idea for some new invention, but don't have the energy, time or money to pursue it on your own or not sure where to start?  Read the full story from the Beacon Journal...

01/01/2010 - A new year has arrived and so did the new council members.  On Tuesday, December 29th, three (3) council members, Michael Raddish, Matthew Kelly and Steve Marks, and the clerk-treasurer, Juliann McCulley, were sworn in to their new positions for 4 years of service.  The positions are not completely "new" to these individuals.  All except Steve Marks were incumbents and Marks was the former Mayor.  We look forward to our elected officials representing and working for the best interests of the people in Mogadore in 2010!

12/03/2009 - Financial challenges continue to affect the Village of Mogadore.  There has been mention of  another police officer being laid off amidst cost cutting discussions among village officials.  Council has presented a resolution for the placement of another .25% income tax increase on the May ballot.  Councilman Kelly and Raddish have volunteered to help promote the passage of this issue.  Recently the tax was defeated by voters the first time it was presented.

Read the details of these stories here, including a link to the scanned hard copy of the meeting minutes...

In Mogadore Council news this week, several other items were discussed.  More than 100 loads of leaves have been picked up so far this year, with more to go.  Mr. Raddish commented that leaf pickup is more complicated than residents realize and keeping the equipment working is very expensive.  The concept of bagging leaves will be discussed in the future.

Mayor Rick asked council to bring back the laid off street worker on a part time basis.  Mr. Raddish suggested putting the maintenance department head under the direction of the street supervisor and removing the department head status.  Also, it was suggested the Mayor have blanket authorization to direct his work.  Certain council members were in opposition, so Mr. Raddish felt it was best to drop the discussion until a later time.

11/17/2009 - The Mogadore Lions Christmas Tree sale will be coming soon.  Please note that the trees will be sold across from the golf course on N Cleveland Ave (Rt. 532).  Let all of your friends know about this year's tree sale and new location!

11/13/2009 - After a great season and a trip to the playoffs, Friday the 13th was the end of the season for the Mogadore Wildcats.  Norwalk St. Paul (12-0) defeated Mogadore (10-2) 48-7 in the Division VI, Region 21 regional semifinal at Ken Dukes Stadium at Medina High School.  Thank you Wildcats for another great season of football in Mogadore!

Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

- 492 YES - Issue 41/21 605 NO - 578 YES - Issue 42/22 591 YES - 590 NO.

School Board - Sansom 841, McDowall 682, Williams 596 and Fisher 570.

11/03/2009 - (10:28pm) Election results are coming in now...check the blog for the latest results.  Preliminary results are showing Kelly, Raddish and Marks as the top vote getters without Portage County reporting.

11/03/2009 - (9:07pm) Election results from Summit County, including all of Mogadore, are delayed due to an earlier ballot shortage in several county locations.  Results will not be shown until all ballots are cast.  Stay tuned for more info.

10/31/2009 - Be sure to read and review the attached documents containing the proposed Mogadore Charter amendment and the error/omission in the ballot language.  Today, the Beacon Journal published a short story notifying Mogadore voters that "Language council OK'd missing from Mogadore charter amendment."  Because of the error on the ballot and the fact that voters are not seeing everything they are voting on, Mogadore voters are urged to VOTE NO on Issue 41 and Issue 21.  This will make the issue moot and it can be correctly placed on the next election ballot for voters to decide.

10/30/2009 - [Mogadore 46, East Canton 13]  Mogadore finishes the regular season at 9-1.  Great job!  Off to the playoffs...Go Cats!

10/27/2009 - IMPORTANT voter information is available regarding the upcoming proposed 1/4% income tax increase that is on the ballot Tuesday, Nov. 3rd.  Please read the attached bulletin and inform yourself before going to the polls to vote.

10/26/2009 - MORE IMPORTANT voter information will be available regarding Issue 41 & Issue 21 that directly affects Mogadore residents.  The text or ballot language does NOT accurately reflect Resolution #2009-38 as passed by council.  (documents showing this error/omission will be available soon)

Currently, the Council and the Mayor each appoint 4 Charter Review Commission members.  The ballot language of proposed Charter amendment reduces the number of members, but does not address the paragraph that has the Mayor making those appointments as noted on #2009-38 as passed by council.

Also, the current Charter states that if the Charter Review Commission recommends a change to the Charter, it MUST be put on the ballot for the voters to decide.  The proposed amendment on the ballot changes the ability of the Charter Review Commission to place their recommendations directly on the ballot.  If council, by majority, rejects the Charter Review recommendations, then it will NOT be put on the ballot for the voters to decide.

If residents VOTE NO on this proposed charter amendment, the error will be a non-issue.  The error can be corrected and the issue put on the ballot at the next election.  If the issue passes, then the voters voted for an issue that was missing substantial language that may have affected their vote.  The RIGHT thing to do is to VOTE NO on ISSUE 41 (Summit Co) & ISSUE 21 (Portage Co).

10/23/2009 - [Mogadore 28, Waterloo 0]  Another win by the Wild Cats!  Mogadore increases its record to 8-1.

10/16/2009 - [Mogadore 40, Windham 13]  Mogadore is now 7-1.  Keep on Goin' Cats!!

10/16/2009 - PRESS RELEASE: Mogadore Village has posted information online about the proposed income tax increase that will be on the ballot this November.  Please take time to read this important information. Mogadore News will obtain the full text of the proposed issues on the ballot and have them available on this website next week.

10/16/2009 - Due to the large file size and download time may be slow from the Mogadore School website, Mogadore News has linked the Mogadore School Bell directly to one of our servers.  This may speed up the time it takes to access the file and help reduce the demands on the school system.  Please be patient since the file size is large.  You can sign up on the Mogadore School website to receive an email copy of the School Bell which is much faster than waiting to access the document online.

10/15/2009 - The Online Edition of the Mogadore School Bell is now available.  There are many upcoming events, so be sure to read through the whole issue and mark your calendars!

10/09/2009 - [Mogadore 39, Streetsboro 15]  Mogadore is now 6-1.  Go Cats!!

10/09/2009 - Did you see the recent Beacon story that said, "Area residents have a downright sour opinion about the place they call home, according to the new ''Soul of the Community'' report by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Gallup Poll."  Evidently, they did not check with the folks in Mogadore.  Our survey of hundreds of Mogadore residents clearly suggests quite the opposite.  People in Mogadore love their traditional, small town America feel, neighbors help neighbors, good schools, safe community, Mogadore loves sports and FOOTBALL, multiple generations of families live in and around Mogadore and many more reasons to love living in Mogadore!

10/06/2009 - Campaigning in Mogadore is gearing up!  Yard signs are popping up like dandelions in the spring and candidates are going door to door.  Be sure to check out our NEW Election 2009 section to find out who the candidates are and what issues are on the ballot this year.

10/04/2009 - Four Mogadore High School football players were injured in a one-vehicle accident Saturday in Brimfield Township. Three were taken to Akron Children's Hospital and one to Akron General Medical Center after the Ford Ranger pickup truck they were in rolled over at least once, Brimfield police said. The injuries were not life threatening, but there were numerous bumps and bruises and perhaps broken bones, said Brimfield Police Chief David Blough.  No further information is available at this time.  As a reminder, if you have young drivers in your home, it is never too often to remind them to drive safely and to always use caution.  It is very easy to get distracted by others in the vehicle, the cell phone, texting, etc. and a serious accident can happen in a blink of time.

10/02/2009 - [Mogadore 7  Woodridge 52]  Mogadore is now 5-1.

09/30/2009 - The cool winds of autumn are blowing, the leaves are beginning to change color and soon the snow (sorry to mention that 4 letter word) will be falling.  With the cold weather comes the high cost of heating our homes.  Now is a great time to make sure your windows are functioning properly, your doors are sealing well and to verify the insulation in your walls and attic.  Many energy efficient improvements may qualify for up to a 30% tax credit.  Be sure to check with your LOCAL contractor for more information.

Also, now is the time to review your natural gas bill and compare this year's prices.  With the drop in the market, energy prices have also fallen.  This means that many of us will be able to get much more favorable rates this heating season as compared to last year.  Please review the OPUC site for the most current cost comparisons and make your choice soon before winter is upon us!  As an example, if you use 150 MCFs during this winter, for every $1 difference in the pricing you will save $150 during the winter.  Some current rates are nearly $4 less than last year's pricing, which adds up to a significant savings.

09/25/2009 - ANOTHER Wildcats win!!  [Mogadore 31  JA Garfield 0]  Mogadore is now 5-0.

09/21/2009 - Our prayers and condolences go out to the families of 2 skydivers that tragically died Saturday evening in Portage County.  Authorities say a parachute failed to fully open during a tandem jump at a skydiving center, killing an instructor and his student.  Instructor Daniel Mathie (30) and student Sierra Thomas (22) will be sadly missed by many friends and family.

09/21/2009 - Welcome home Matt Kelly!  We are glad to see you return safely from another tour of duty with the National Guard.  Thank you for your service to our great country so that we may have the liberties and freedoms that so many have sacrificed and given so much in the past, present and the future.

09/15/2009 - Mogadore politics makes the local news again.  Local council "candidate" Mark Hilbish (or non-candidate...it's a bit confusing) cannot get his $30 refund from the Summit County Board of Elections.  "Why does he want a refund?" you may ask.  He wanted to know why too and when Mark did not get any answers, he contacted the Beacon Journal.  Read the rest of the story from the Beacon Journal...

09/14/2009 - Thank you to all who came out to the Car Cruise-In Benefit Fundraiser for Brian Sigmund on Sunday at The Avenue Market & Deli.  Brian is a local father that was recently involved in a serious car accident and has been given a 3 month plus time before he can return to work.  A couple of friends decided to help out and organize this event and all proceeds go to Brian and his family.  If you would like to help the Sigmund family in any way, please call or stop by The Avenue Market & Deli.

08/02/2009 - Well, it appears that more cut backs are under way in Mogadore.  According to recent information provided to Mogadore News,

"The village has laid off one street department, the remaining three were forced to take a 10% pay cut, the police only had to take a 5% cut. Other than the Fire Chief, Assistant Chief and Captains the other firemen were not forced to take any pay cuts.  It would be nice if the elected officials would voluntarily give up 10% also.  If the village was taking better care of the tax payers monies, we would not be in this position. The village knew that a big business was moving out of town, they were they not trying to get other business to come to Mogadore."

Mogadore News will verify the above information and update the website accordingly.

07/22/2009 - Tonight's council work session included discussions about a possible fire/safety levy, a police levy and a .25% income tax increase.  Based upon the discussion, it appears that the .25% income tax increase is a likely option to be on the ballot the next election.  It was estimated that this tax increase would generate approximately $240,000 per year and would affect about 10% of Mogadore residents that work in the village.  This year to date the village is down $100,000 compared to 2008.  The council went into an executive session re personnel and payroll issues.  When they returned, it was announced that there would be a Special Council Meeting on Wednesday, July 29 @ 7:30pm.  The special meeting would pertain to legislation re a payroll matter.

07/21/2009 - Be sure to attend THIS Wednesday's council work session at 7pm.  There will be some very important discussions among the council members regarding very important financial issues facing Mogadore.  Residents of Mogadore need to get involved and come out to the council meetings and work sessions to find out what is happening in Mogadore and how, as a community, we can respond to the important issues affecting ALL of Mogadore.  Don't miss the meeting!

07/15/2009 - Get caught GREEN HANDED in Mogadore!  A representative from the Summit/Akron Solid Waste Management Authority www.saswma.org informed Mogadore Council and residents that a new recycling container is available at the Mogadore Lions Park, 194 Hale Avenue.  If you get "caught" dropping off recyclable materials such as paper, #1 or #2 plastic bottles, glass jars and bottles or metal cans during July and August, you will receive a FREE gift card from one of the "Green Handed Partners."  This includes the Akron Aeros, Gionino's Pizza and Swenson's Drive-In.  Click here to view or print the flyer with all of the details on the program (you can also check out Mogadore's own Russ Pry "caught" GREEN HANDED).

07/08/2009 - URGENT NEWS...In recent correspondence from Mayor Michael Rick of Mogadore, effective July 20, 2009 and July 22, 2009, Police Chief Fowler has been directed to "eliminate the use of the part time officers" and has informed one full time officer that "the village will be laying you off effective July 22, 2009" because "there is a lack of funding to continue employing 8 full time officers," respectively.  Also, the Mayor states that "the Village of Mogadore is experiencing severe financial problems" and that if the financial picture improves, he can be called back to work in the near future.  As recently as May 20, 2009, per council minutes, there were raises given to village workers retroactive to January 1, 2009.  (click on a date to read the council minutes)  These are the facts, you decide and read the letters here...  Any information or feedback readers may have on this issue or others in Mogadore and surrounding communities can be emailed to news@mogadorenews.info .

06/18/2009 - IMPORTANT: Attention Mogadore residents!  Two (2) proposed changes (2009-38 & 2009-39) to the Mogadore Charter are currently being proposed by council.  Please be sure to read these proposed changes, contact your council members or the mayor for more information on the pros and cons to these 2 proposed changes to way in which our local government operates.  The changes could affect Section 18.01 and Section 3.11 of the current Charter.  You can also attend a council meeting on the first or third Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm and ask your questions.  If the proposals pass at council, they will be put on the ballot for the voters to decide.  You can also review the current language in the Mogadore Charter to compare the proposed changes.

05/27/2009 - Although the first official day of Summer is June 21, 2009, Memorial Day weekend is the un-official beginning of summer.  Mogadore celebrated this Memorial Day with an annual parade and ceremony at the local cemetery.  The parade had fire trucks, local veterans, baseball teams and best of all...kids with decorated bikes riding along in the parade.  Mayor Mike Rick and Council President Bill Bauer presided over the ceremony after the parade.  Mrs. Lisa Kelly delivered a speech written by her husband and Mogadore Councilman, Matt Kelly.  Matt Kelly was recently deployed to Iraq.  Our prayers are with him, his family and all of the others serving our great country!  Start showing your support for Matt right now and order your Matt Kelly Mogadore Supports You T-shirts.  Click here to find out how...

05/17/2009 - Local mayors have come out in support of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic and sign a letter recently  published in the Beacon Journal objecting to the recent recall effort.  The letter was signed by the mayors of Hudson, Reminderville, New Franklin, Peninsula, Stow, Barberton, Boston Heights, Tallmadge, Lakemore, Norton, Macedonia, Richfield, Green, Twinsburg and Fairlawn.  The letter was not signed by the mayors of six Summit communities: Cuyahoga Falls, Clinton, Munroe Falls, Northfield, Mogadore and Silver Lake.

Those mayors that did not sign the agreement had various reasons, from not wanting to get involved, intending to be on the list, to the mayors of Munroe Falls and Mogadore not able to be reached for comment.

05/07/2009 - This month's Greater Akron Aquarium Society (GAAS) meeting at the Mogadore Community Center welcomed Dr. Chris Bonar, VMD from the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and President of the new Cleveland Aquarium.  His very informative presentation provided the history of the original Cleveland Aquarium and the interesting discoveries and achievements that came from the aquarium that was located on the North Coast for nearly 3 decades.  For a number of reasons, the original aquarium closed in 1986.  For over 20 years, due to numerous economic and political factors, the new aquarium has not been built.  But now, efforts to raise awareness and support for the new aquarium are gaining momentum.  The Cleveland Aquarium website states, "Our vision is to restore a missing piece of Cleveland’s cultural heritage and to help ensure enhanced respect and stewardship of water and its inhabitants."

The GAAS meets every 1st Thursday of the month at 8pm at the Mogadore Community Center.  Be sure to check out their website ( http://www.gaas-fish.net )  and come out to a monthly meeting or other event.  Admission is free and guests are always welcomed!

05/01/2009 - Mogadore School Superintendent, Terry Byers and Treasurer, Chris Adams presented the school district's financial status last night at a community information meeting.  There were an estimated 75-100 people in attendance to watch a Power Point slide show and to hear the current condition of the Mogadore Schools and the future financial challenges over the next five years.

As our state officials continue to try to figure out the state's financial problems, our local schools continue to feel the crunch.  In 1997, Mogadore residents passed the last school levy and unless there are some great solutions coming from state law makers (don't count on it), then local residents will have to continue to foot the additional costs of educating our children.  Open enrollment has been a help to the system.  Additional students and revenues have supplemented the district's income without the addition of new teachers.  Mr. Byers stated that the school has and will continue to cut costs wherever they can without affecting the quality of students' education.

04/29/2009 - Fairlawn, OH, (NYSE: OMN) – OMNOVA Solutions’ Performance Chemicals facility in Mogadore, Ohio was presented with a 2008 Award for Excellence in Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Performance from the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council (OCTC) – for the fourth consecutive year. 04/22/2009 - Ohio's small businesses -- which provide about 50 percent of the state's jobs -- are calling for health care reform as they struggle to provide insurance to workers, according to a survey released Tuesday. An estimated 69 percent of the state's small businesses don't offer health coverage to their employees, according to a telephone survey of 300 randomly selected small-business owners. Most said they simply could not afford the coverage. And, among those who provide coverage, 71 percent say they are "really struggling to do so."  Read the full article at http://www.cleveland.com

04/14/2009 - Summit County gun ban update...the Akron Beacon Journal reported that Summit County has scrapped controversial legislation that would have banned county workers from carrying firearms on the job. County Executive Russ Pry pulled the measure from Monday's County Council agenda after it was panned as unnecessary and an erosion of workers' rights to protect themselves. ''The issues raised about whether there is a need or not should be examined further,'' Pry said, adding the proposal is probably dead.

04/09/2009 - Summit County Council is considering banning all county employees from carrying firearms while they are working, even if they are in their own personal vehicle and legally allowed to carry a firearm in Ohio.  Former Mogadore councilman, Jason Dodson, chief of staff for County Executive Russ Pry, said that the legislation is necessary for liability purposes.  County Councilwoman Gloria Rodgers, who is obtaining a concealed-carry permit, called the legislation unnecessary.

04/01/2009 - Yes, today is April Fool's Day, but it's no joke, the politicians are still spending your money or your kid's money or grand kid's money.  Have you heard about the Tea Parties being organized all around the state and the country?  The modern day Tea Parties are a peaceful way to protest the unbridled government spending going on in Washington DC.  You decide for yourself and check it out at www.OhioTeaParty.com.

03/16/2009 - Mogadore "neighbors" Springfield Twp. and Lakemore Village may try a merger of their police departments as early as May 2009.  Any merger must be approved by the two communities. The Village Council is expected to begin discussing the issue at its meeting at 6pm, today, March 16. The Township trustees plan to debate it on March 26.

A committee made up of leaders from both communities recommended the police consolidation last week. The group also is studying whether a merger of the fire departments would be worthwhile. ''On our side, we're not trying to make a profit,'' Springfield Trustee Dean Young said of the police proposal. ''We're trying to provide adequate safety.'' Lakemore and Springfield are the latest local governments talking about police consolidation as a way to cut costs.

03/04/2009 - Congratulations to Susan Ross as our newly appointed council member.  Mrs. Ross will replace Tim Pinson who recently resigned his position.  She is the third council appointment in the last 13 months along with Matthew Kelly and John Kinsey.  Newly appointed Mrs. Ross, 2008 appointed Matthew Kelly and Michael Raddish all have terms expiring this year.  With 3 council seats available and 2 fresh new appointees on council, this election year ought to be quite interesting!

03/03/2009 - The end of winter in Mogadore and Northeast Ohio is near...well, at least Daylight Saving Time arrives this Sunday at 2 a.m.  Be sure to set your clocks FORWARD (Spring-forward) one hour before you go to bed Saturday night or you will not be on time for church or other Sunday morning activities!

Although we lose an hour of much needed sleep, we gain an extra hour of daylight.  Maybe it will be above freezing and we can actually enjoy some time outside?

02/24/2009 - Former Mogadore Mayor Steve Marks' 27-year-old son, Steve Marks II, remains in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Akron City Hospital following a one-car accident early Sunday morning at the intersection of East Market Street and Carlton Drive in Akron.

According to police, Steve Marks II of Mogadore was traveling eastbound on East Market about 1 a.m. when he lost control of his 2005 Honda Accord and struck a utility pole. He had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters.
